Brainspotting Counseling in Katy, TX

Well, hello there, I'm Krissy White, MA, LPC-S, a certified Brainspotting therapist in Katy, TX. I use Brainspotting to help teens and adults work through anxiety, trauma, and feeling stuck, especially when talk therapy alone hasn't been enough. Sessions are in person in Katy or online in Texas, Illinois, and Maine, and it starts with a free 15-minute consultation.

Maybe you have been avoiding things, staying in bed all day binging the latest show, or lacking the motivation to just ‘get going.’ You want to have the confidence to try new things and make friends, but you keep falling short. It’s just not working.

You have probably tried talk therapy in the past (which I love and practice) and didn’t get the results you were looking for. Brainspotting offers a different way in, working with what your body holds, not just what you can put into words.

Brainspotting is a brain and body based approach for working through trauma and overwhelming emotions. We can do our Brainspotting counseling sessions in Katy, TX or virtually in Texas, Illinois, and Maine!

What does Brainspotting Feel like?

Everyone experiences Brainspotting differently. Since there is no way to do it wrong, this opens up your ability to feel and accept what comes up without judgement.

There are typically 2 common ways people process when in a brainspotting session. I have some clients who recall the events of what they are processing and can have coherent thoughts on the topic.

However, I have other people who have disjointed thoughts that don’t seem to make sense in the moment. This could feel like a dream or like the thoughts are random and not connected to the topic.

Both of these ways of processing can also include a physical response where the client might feel a twitching in different body parts or feel the need to stretch during the session.

All of this is normal! That is the body’s way of processing and expressing the stored emotion in the body.

Sometimes you just have to feel it to believe. Let’s get started today!

Brainspotting is unique to you, and you can’t do it wrong! There is no pressure to feel or experience it a certain way.

You’re not alone, as your Brainspotting Therapist providing counseling in Katy, TX, I’ll be your guide to help you explore and process so that you can make progress and achieve your goals. Sessions are also available virtually online, and the process works the same whether we’re in the same room, or connected online.

EMDR Vs. Brainspotting

Many people ask me about the differences between EMDR and Brainspotting. Both are well-respected approaches that work with the brain and body, just in different ways. I'm not trained in EMDR, but I have many colleagues who use it well. I'll admit I'm a little biased: Brainspotting has become the heart of my trauma work because it's flexible and follows your lead. It was developed by David Grand in 2003, building on his earlier work with EMDR. A distinction I make with clients is that the best approach is the one that fits you.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a brain and body based therapy that uses where you look to help you process what's stored underneath your thoughts. While you focus on something that's bothering you and notice what you feel in your body, I help you find an eye position (a “brainspot”) connected to that feeling, and we stay with it while your brain and body process. It was developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003. A distinction I make with clients is that Brainspotting isn't about figuring things out; it's about giving your nervous system room to finish what it couldn't at the time. You're awake and in control the whole time, and you can talk as much or as little as you want.

Brainspotting vs. EMDR: how do I choose?

Both work with the brain and body, and both are used for trauma and anxiety. EMDR follows a more structured protocol with side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or tones. Brainspotting uses a single eye position and follows your lead, which some people find gentler and more flexible. I'm trained in Brainspotting, not EMDR, so I'm a little biased, but the best approach is the one you feel safe with, with a clinician you trust. If you've tried EMDR and it felt like too much or too structured, Brainspotting may be worth talking about. For a deeper comparison, read my EMDR vs. Brainspotting post.

Who is Brainspotting not a good fit for?

Brainspotting isn't the right first step for everyone. I usually don't start with it if you're in crisis, having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, or don't yet have enough day-to-day stability to handle stirring up strong emotions. In those cases, building safety and coping skills comes first, and sometimes a higher level of care is the better fit. One pattern I frequently notice is people hoping Brainspotting will fix everything quickly. It can be powerful, but it works best as part of a plan we build together. If you're in crisis right now, call or text 988, or call 911.
